Overview of the Train System in Stockholm

Stockholm’s train system is part of the broader public transportation network managed by SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik). It includes several categories of trains:

  1. Tunnelbana (Metro/Subway):

    • The Stockholm Metro is the most commonly used train system within the city. It has three main lines (Green, Red, and Blue), with a total of seven branches and 100 stations.
    • Known for its stunning art installations, many stations are considered underground art galleries.
  2. Pendeltåg (Commuter Trains):

    • These trains connect Stockholm with its suburbs and surrounding regions, including Uppsala and Södertälje.
    • Operated by SL, they are ideal for longer distances within the Stockholm County.
  3. Regional and Intercity Trains:

    • Operated by companies like SJ (Statens Järnvägar), these trains connect Stockholm to other cities in Sweden and neighboring countries.
    • Not part of the SL system, so separate tickets are required.
  4. Roslagsbanan (Light Rail):

    • A narrow-gauge suburban railway serving the northeastern suburbs of Stockholm.
  5. Saltsjöbanan (Suburban Rail):

    • A suburban railway line connecting Stockholm to the southeastern suburbs.
  6. Arlanda Express:

    • A high-speed train connecting Stockholm Central Station to Arlanda Airport in just 18 minutes. This is a premium service with separate ticketing.

How to Purchase Tickets

  1. SL App:

    • Download the SL app (available on iOS and Android) to purchase and store digital tickets. This is the most convenient option.
  2. SL Access Card:

    • A reusable smart card that can be loaded with tickets or travel funds. Purchase it at SL Centers, ticket machines, or convenience stores like Pressbyrån. The card itself costs SEK 20.
  3. Ticket Machines:

    • Found at most stations, these machines accept cards and allow you to purchase single tickets or load your SL Access Card.
  4. SL Centers:

    • Located at major stations like T-Centralen, where you can get assistance and purchase tickets.
  5. Onboard (Limited):

    • Single tickets can be purchased via the SL app or by card on some buses, but not on trains.
  6. Arlanda Express Tickets:

    • Purchase online, via the Arlanda Express app, or at ticket machines at the airport or Stockholm Central Station.

Using the Trains

  1. Entering the Station:

    • For the Tunnelbana and Pendeltåg, you’ll need to tap your SL Access Card or scan your mobile ticket at the gates to enter.
  2. Boarding:

    • Check the digital displays for train destinations and departure times. Trains are punctual, so arrive a few minutes early.
  3. Transfers:

    • Transfers between SL services (e.g., Tunnelbana to Pendeltåg) are seamless and covered by the same ticket within its validity period.
  4. Exiting:

    • Simply walk out of the station; no need to tap out.

Accessibility Features

Stockholm’s train system is highly accessible:

  • Elevators and Escalators: Available at most stations for wheelchair users and those with strollers or heavy luggage.
  • Tactile Guidance: Many stations have tactile paving for visually impaired passengers.
  • Priority Seating: Clearly marked on all trains.
  • Announcements: Audio and visual announcements are made in Swedish and English.
  • Wheelchair Accessibility: All Tunnelbana and Pendeltåg trains are wheelchair accessible.

If you need assistance, SL staff are available at major stations.

Local Tips and Considerations

  1. Plan Your Journey:

    • Use the SL app or Google Maps to plan your route and check for any service disruptions.
  2. Avoid Rush Hours:

    • Peak times are typically 7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM on weekdays. Trains can get crowded during these times.
  3. Art in the Metro:

    • Take some time to explore the art in the Tunnelbana stations. Notable stations include T-Centralen (Blue Line), Solna Centrum (Blue Line), and Stadion (Red Line).
  4. Validate Your Ticket:

    • Always ensure your ticket is valid before boarding. Random inspections are conducted, and fines for traveling without a valid ticket are SEK 1,500.
  5. Arlanda Airport Travel:

    • If traveling to/from Arlanda Airport, consider whether the Pendeltåg or Arlanda Express suits your needs. The Pendeltåg is cheaper but slower, while the Arlanda Express is faster but more expensive.
  6. Weather Considerations:

    • During winter, train schedules may be slightly affected by snow. Check for updates in the SL app.

By following this guide, you should be well-prepared to navigate Stockholm’s train system efficiently and enjoyably. Safe travels!
